Horace Turner was born in Brandon, about 1891, the son of Joseph (a shepherd) and Kate.  In 1901 he was living with his family in Hough, but had left home by 1911.  In Aug 1917 he was discharged from 82nd Training Reserve Battalion (private, 50483) at York, age 26, as no longer physically fit for war service (para 392 (XVI) King's Regulations).  He was described as 5ft 2” tall, fair complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair; sober and well behaved.  He was moving back to Hough on the Hill to be a farm labourer.
