George Bateman
(Also on Syston war memorial)
George Bateman was born in about 1896 in Wainfleet, where (by 1901) his father Alfred was a yard man. By 1911 the family had moved to Cliff Farm, near Marston, where Alfred was the foreman and his eldest son George (age 15) was a farm labourer.
Alfred went on to work for Mr Barnes of Syston as a milkman before volunteering for the Lincolnshire Regiment at Grantham soon after the start of WW1. He served with 6th Battalion, a New Army unit formed at Lincoln in August 1914. After basic training at Belton Park they moved to Witley and Frensham in Surrey. In June 1915 they sailed for Gallipoli from Liverpool via Mudros, landing at Suvla Bay (near Lala Baba) on 7th August.
Whilst at Gallipoli George contracted diphtheria and was evacuated to a hospital in Malta, but died soon afterwards on 15th Nov 1915 and was buried at Pieta Military Cemetery.
