Charlie Carford
Charles (Charlie) Carford was born 1888 in Fulbeck, where his father (also Charles) was an agricultural labourer. In 1878 Charles (senior) had been fined for leaving a horse and cart on the road near Caythorpe Hall when he jumped over the park wall to get chestnuts.
Charles (senior) died in 1896 leaving his widow Susan (nee Scott) with 7 children. In 1901 they seem to have been living next to the Cooling family. By 1911 Charles and his older brother John Henry were working in the ironstone quarries, while his younger brother George was a blacksmith’s apprentice.
Charles married Fannie S Robinson in 1911. In Mar 1915 he joined the Royal Horse Artillery. After training at Woolwich he went to France in June 1915. He sent the next 3 years in France until being hospitalised with rheumatic fever from May to Sep 1918.
Charles’ health didn’t recover and he died in Jan 1921 at Ludthorpe Hill, Fulbeck.
His brother George had joined the Royal Army Service Corps as a Farrier in Sep 1914 but was invalided out with rheumatism in 1915.
