CROWLEY
Private Walter Crowley was born in Caythorpe (next to the bakehouse/shop). By 1911 he’d moved to The Cottage, near Normanton (now Country View Park) with his family. He was an engine driver in the nearby ironstone quarries until joining the Lincolnshire Yeomanry in May 1915. He was sent with his Sqn to Egypt before transferring to the Machine Gun Corps and being sent to France in Jan 1918 with 104th Battalion, MGC. Whilst in France he saw lots of heavy fighting and was home on leave during Oct 1918. Shortly after rejoining his unit in France he caught influenza and then bronchial pneumonia and died on 14th Dec 1918, aged 28. He was buried at Kortrijk, Belgium.
