Charles William Hales, late of Court Leys near Brandon was born in Sudbrooke in 1896. His father (also Charles William) was from Goulceby, near Louth, in 1901 his father was a yardman/farm worker..  His mother Sarah was born Salmonby, near Horncastle.  He enlisted in 1915 (age 19) and joined 3rd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment (58348).  He was killed in action on 30 May 1918 while serving with Prince of Wales' (North Staffordshire) Regiment (40950).  He has no known grave but is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial.
